| VILA VERDE |
Vila Verde is a small place located 15 km north of the provincial capital, Braga, in the heart of the lush, green Minho region.
Officially granted its charter on 24 October, 1855, the town is documented as far back as the 10th century, before Portugal itself was established.
Nowadays it is a thriving centre for handicrafts, winemaking and cattle breeding.
What to see. Vila Verde is known for the very high quality of its handicrafts, especially pottery and wickerwork. The traditional lover’s handkerchief (lenço de namorado) is made by local women and offered to appropriate suitors as a means to attract their hand in marriage.
Set in the middle of the thickly wooded River Homem valley, Vila Verde is the perfect base from which to explore the enchanting Minho region, in particular Braga, the religious capital of the north.
Those touring the area are encouraged to stop when they see the vinho verde sign to taste and buy the light, sparkling variety of wine made in estates all over the region.
Nearby. 10 km west of Vila Verde stands the 14th century tower of Penegate, located in the small village of Carreiras.
