An old hill-top town, medieval Redondo
is mostly renowned for its pottery and fine Alentejan wines.
Situated 34 km due east of Évora on the Vila Viçosa
road, it is a cheerful little town with an imposing castle and
several examples of wrought-iron balconies and window boxes,
particularly on the houses in Rua São Miguel. What to see. Built at the end of the 16th century, the
parish church features impressive Baroque altars and an exquisite
ivory statue of Christ. The convent church of S. António
has a classical façade and several interesting 18th-century
azulejo glazed tiles. The hand-painted pottery of Redondo has
a distinctive homely style, with plates decorated with fresh
floral designs or charming pastoral life. Nearby. 10 km north of Redondo lies the historical Convent
of São Paulo, built in 1376 and home to Catherine of
Bragança on her return to Portugal after the death of
her husband, King Charles II of England, in 1692
