Impressively
situated on each side of a deep ravine, the district capital
of Ponta do Sol was founded in the 15th century by Jean d'Esmenaut,
a Flemish sugar grower. Its houses are scattered on both sides
of the River Ponte do Sol, which flows down from its source
in the Pico da Arco mountain. What to see. The 15th-century parish church of Ponta
do Sol boasts an unusual Angevin triptych and some valuable
17th- and 18th.century silverware. Nearby. Visitors stopping at the Madalena do Mar belvedere,
10 km from Ponta do Sol, can enjoy spectacular views along Madeira's
south-western coastline.
