Monfortinho
is a pretty spa town situated right on the Spanish border, about
an hour’s drive northeast of Castelo Branco.
The spa’s success is largely due to the enthusiastic and
persistent spirit of Dr. José Gardete Martins (1869-1957)
who dedicated his life to the development of the therapeutic
qualities of the local spring waters.
After being granted a concession in 1907, he went on to inaugurate
the spa centre in 1940, thus establishing one of the best facilities
of its kind in southern Europe.
What to see. Open all year round, the spa centre
of Monfortinho is mostly recognised for the treatment of skin
diseases and problems with the digestive system; its spring
waters have one of the highest contents of silica in Portugal.
On-site facilities include two comfortable three-star hotels,
tennis and squash courts, several swimming pools, a discotheque
and one of the most popular fishing and shooting clubs in the
region.
Nearby. Surrounded by 7,000 hectares of prime
land on the outskirts of Monfortinho, Vale Feitoso Farm runs
regular photographic safaris offering visitors the chance to
observe wild deer in their natural habitat, with the possibility
of seeing other animals such as wild boar.
