SOUTHERN PORTUGAL
The south of Portugal consists of the fertile Alentejo
region and the sun-soaked Algarve.
This part of the country is always popular with
groups, owing to its varied landscape, fine sandy
beaches and temperate year-round climate.
Blessed with numerous golf courses, luxurious beach
resorts and quaint little fishing villages, the
Algarve is a dream destination for conference and
incentive organisers. Some of Europe's best-known
hotels exist along the region's 150-kilometre stretch
of golden coastline, most notably Quinta do Lago,
Sheraton, Penina, Vila Vita Parc and the prominently-situated
Vilamoura Marinotel.
Besides every sport and leisure facility under the
sun, the region also boasts three modern casinos
and several state-of-the-art congress venues. Two
large-scale confex centres are due to open near
Faro and Portimão in the next three years.
Referred to as the garden of Portugal,
the vast Alentejo region is capturing the imagination
of MICE organisers around the world. Home to cork
and olive groves, wheatfields and vineyards, the
whole area remains largely undiscovered by tourists,
making it the ideal place for off-the-beaten-track
incentive trips or ecotourism-based conference programmes.
