OPORTO
Portugals second city, Oporto, has all the
right ingredients for a successful conference or
incentive programme.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996,
the city is as popular today for its history and
culture as it has always been for the famous Port
wine.
Key attractions such as the 12th-century Sé
Cathedral and the magnificent São Francisco
Church finely illustrate the citys ancient
patrimony, while the old wine lodges on the south
bank of the River Douro are tailor-made for group
dinners and cocktail receptions. Other versatile
venues include the centrally-located Palácio
da Bolsa and high-tech Europarque congress centre
south of the city.
But much of Oportos appeal lies in the fact
that it remains a largely undiscovered destination,
a place that most people have never visited before.
And with a modern infrastructure and several top-end
hotels to choose from, theres plenty of appeal
for the international MICE market.
Furthermore, the citys joint reign as the
2001 European Capital of Culture (along with Rotterdam)
means that planners and organisers can spice up
group itineraries with concerts, exhibitions and
other special events happening throughout the year.
