NORTHERN PORTUGAL
Northern Portugal is a beautiful region steeped
in tradition and full of local history.
Stretching from the green Minho region to the enchanting
Douro Valley, it is a green and pleasant land of
mountains, ancient cities and extraordinary natural
beauty.
The terraced slopes of the River Douro are the real
home of Port wine, which is carried downriver to
the lodges of Oporto before being shipped around
the world. Most of the winemakers in the Douro Valley
are well prepared to receive small groups for guided
tours and wine-tasting sessions, while cruise companies
operating along the river can cater for corporate
functions and pre- and post-event excursions.
Numerous festivals take place in Northern Portugal
each year in honour of a particular saint, who is
celebrated with colourful street processions, enthusiastic
folklore and the very best in regional cuisine.
The region is also popular for its romantic castles,
lakes and charming fishing villages dotted along
the Atlantic coast.
