THE ISLANDS OF THE AZORES
Located far out in the Atlantic some 1,300 km west
of the mainland, the Azores is an unspoilt natural
haven of unparalleled proportions. Divided into
three groups and forming Europes westernmost
tip, the nine-island volcanic archipelago is still
one of the MICE industrys best-kept secrets.
The largest of the islands, São Miguel, is
the centre of group business in the region, due
mainly to its regular international flight connections
and good selection of three- and four-star hotels.
Along with high-quality hotels and modern conference
facilities, the capital Ponta Delgada is a delightful
group destination with narrow, cobbled streets,
Baroque churches and forts dating back to the 16th
century.
To really appreciate the true beauty of the Azores,
its best to visit more than just one island.
Terceiras capital, Angra do Heroismo, earned
UNESCO World Heritage status for its well-preserved
patrimony and ancient sea-faring tradition, while
another breathtaking highlight is the dramatic,
steep-sided mountain of Pico Island, which at 2,351
metres is Portugals highest point.
Popular group activities in the Azores include whale-watching,
nature rambling and golf in the lush-green meadows
of São Miguel. Cycling is another option
for small groups visiting the region.
