| MEALHADA |
Conveniently located between the spa centres of Luso and Curia in central Portugal, Mealhada is the centre of the Bairrada wine region.
The town is best known for its leitão assado (roast sucking pig), an enormously popular dish served in restaurants all over town.
What to see. Fine diners from all over Portugal and beyond converge on Mealhada to feast upon leitão, the town’s famous pig dish baked in brick ovens in dozens of restaurants lined up along the main thoroughfare. A particularly tasty version is leitão à Bairrada, which is served crisp and peppery with slices of orange.
As an accompaniment, the red Bairrada wines go well with leitão and any other meat dish, particularly those from the local co-operative.
Nearby. Just 7 km to the east of Mealhada is Luso, one of Portugal’s best-known spa towns. Once a small village, it developed into a lively spa centre in the 18th century when its hot-water springs became a focus for tourism. The thermal waters, which originate from a spring below the chapel of São João, are believed to be of immense therapeutic value in the treatment of a wide range of conditions, from bad circulation and muscle tone to renal problems and rheumatism. |
