MANGUALDE
Surrounded by vineyards and orchards, on a ridge between the Dão and Mondego rivers, the little town of Mangualde is within striking distance of the Serra da Estrela mountains.
What to see. The 18th century Misericordia church features a delightfully small exterior and a fine painted ceiling inside.
Finest among Mangualde’s many noble residences is the 18th century Palácio dos Condes de Anadia, prominently situated on the main street. With its imposing pink baroque façade, the palace (which is privately owned and still inhabited) is ranked among the most distinguished buildings in the country.
Nearby. Conveniently situated 18 km northwest of Mangualde is Viseu, one of the show towns of central Portugal. The Dão Valley region, source of many of Portugal’s most popular table wines, lies to the northeast.
