Maia
Small and easily accessible by road from all points on the island, the pretty village of Maia is the ideal base from which to explore São Miguel’s spectacular northern coastline.
Popular as a summer resort, its idyllic seaside location attracts a succession of walkers, cyclists and motorists looking for a convenient place to break their journey.
What to see. Typical of the region, Maia is a small fishing village with safe swimming off the harbour quay. Its central focus is a large pink building which houses a theatre, meeting space and a range of other community facilities.
Nearby. Situated in a prime location just south of Maia, the Gorreana Tea Plantation has been producing black and green tea since 1883. Using specially adapted cultivation techniques, it is grown without the use of any insecticides, producing a very tasty and full-flavoured tea.
Further south, Furnas golf course was originally designed by top Scottish architect Mackenzie Ross, with Cameron Powell adding a further 9 holes in 1986. Facilities include a driving range, pitching and putting practice areas and a clubhouse with restaurant, bar and pro shop.
