WHERE TO STAY
Lisbon has the range of accommodation one would expect to find in a modern European capital.
There is a good choice of hotels in the downtown Baixa district and along the Avenida da Liberdade, while the resort towns of Cascais and Estoril provide a more relaxing alternative to the hustle and bustle of the city.
Visitors can choose from every type of accommodation, ranging from a sprawling five-star resort hotel to the cheapest and most basic pensão.
Apart from the normal selection of star-graded hotels, it is also possible to stay in a more traditional type of accommodation such as a privately-owned manor house where guests are encouraged to eat with the family, or in an estalagem, a traditional inn-style establishment.
Alternatively, staying in a state-operated Pousada allows visitors the chance to sleep in a restored castle or palace with all modern comforts and conveniences available.
For campers, the municipal campsite on the edge of Monsanto Forest Park offers a wide range of facilities such as a restaurant and swimming pool.
