PARKS
AND GARDENS
Lisbon’s so-called ‘green lungs’
reflect its far-flung position in Europe’s
south-western corner.
Approximately one-quarter of the city is covered
by the hilly Monsanto Park, which is more of a recreational
forest and excursion area than a park.
Visitors cannot miss the centrally-located Edward
VII Park, which gently slopes down towards the River
Tagus. Located snugly in the north-western corner
of the park, Estufa Fria (meaning unheated greenhouse)
houses rare tropical plants from places as far afield
as Asia and Africa.
Two more green lungs worth visiting are Estrela
Gardens with its splendid lookout terrace and the
Botanical Garden near the tourist centre of Belém.
