LISBON’S
PALACES
Portugal’s regal past is well reflected by
the many palaces to be found scattered across the
capital and beyond.
Famous for its faded-pink façade, the president’s
palace in Belém was built in the 16th century
for the royal family, who were staying there when
the great earthquake stuck in 1755.
Occupying a quiet rural spot on the edge of Monsanto
Park, the delightful Palácio Fronteira was
built in 1640 as a hunting pavilion for João
de Mascarenhas, the first Marquês de Fronteira.
Further afield, the majestic royal palaces of Queluz
and Sintra are well worth taking time out of the
city to explore.
