GETTING
AROUND
Lisbon is proud of its transport system, and despite
the fact that some of it is rather old it is still
the best and cheapest way of getting around.
The extensive network of buses can get you anywhere
you want to go, while the expanding metro system
penetrates the heart of the city and stretches to
the Parque das Nações leisure area
in the west of the city.
Visitors shouldn’t be afraid to jump in a
taxi, they are still a cost effective way of getting
around.
Taking a trip on a pre-World War One tram provides
a touch of old-world nostalgia and is a fitting
way of observing life in one of Europe’s oldest
capitals.
And nobody should leave Lisbon without the thrill
of riding in one of the city’s ancient funicular
railways (elevadores), a journey that guarantees
breathtaking panoramic views from the top of the
hill.
To see the surrounding areas such as Sintra, Estoril
or the Costa Azul, there are regular train and ferry
services to get you there. Alternatively, hiring
a car and driving around can be an economical option
for a group of three or four people.
