BEACHES
Lisbon boasts two glorious stretches of golden sandy coastline, one to the north of the River Tagus (the Costa do Estoril) and the Costa Azul (Blue Coast) to the south.
Both are blessed with an abundance of fine sandy beaches (praias), each with its own natural features and characteristics.
Beginning 20 kilometres west of Lisbon and continuing past the famous Guincho Beach near Cascais, the Costa do Estoril is a cosmopolitan resort region easily accessible by train or car from the centre of Lisbon.
Some of the most popular beaches in this region are located between Estoril and Cascais, while several more can be found further up the west coast between Cabo da Roca and Peniche.
Those who make the effort to visit the Costa Azul on the south side of the river will be rewarded with some of the best bathing conditions in the whole of Portugal. With 15 kilometres of golden, sandy coastline, the region’s main holiday area, the Costa da Caparica, is a busy resort between May and September. Its beaches are made more accessible by a miniature railway operated along the route during the summer months.
Those who enjoy water sports can take full advantage of the more sheltered beaches to be found further down the Costa Azul at Lagoa de Albufeira, Sesimbra and Portinho da Arrábida, where all the necessary equipment can be hired at a reasonable rate.
