Lisbon Airport lies just 4 km north of the
city centre. A taxi journey takes approximately
15-20 minutes outside the rush hour, and costs
€ 7 to 10 including luggage surcharge. An
efficient Aerobus service costs much less and
runs with regularity seven days a week.
The capital's bus company, Carris, operates an
extensive system of buses (autocarros), trams
(eléctricos) and funiculars (elevadores).
Bus-stops are clearly marked by signposts or shelters.
All stops display a map of the bus route, while
many have a large map of the city's entire transport
system. Lisbon also boasts an ever-growing Metro
system that provides a fast, cheap and efficient
service throughout the centre of the city and
beyond.
Several different types of tourist travel pass
are available, such as the popular 1, 2 &
3-day Lisboa Card which starts at €11
for adults and includes free admission to 27 museums
and monuments.
Carris information kiosks at various locations
in the city provide public transport information
and sell tickets and passes. The main ones exist
at the base of the Santa Justa Elevator and at
the bottom of Edward VII Park beside the Marquês
de Pombal roundabout.
Commuter trains to Cascais (stopping in Oeiras,
Carcavelos, Estoril and other towns along the
Estoril Coast) depart from Cais do Sodré,
located on the riverfront. Trains to the northwestern
suburbs, including the historic town of Sintra,
leave from the centrally-located Rossio station
every 15 minutes.
