The small medieval town of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo is located close to the Spanish frontier, approximately 50 km northeast of Guarda in the Beiras region.
Situated on top of a hill, it is a popular stopover for tourists en route to and from Spain. What to see. Dating back to the 12th century, and reconstructed in the 18th century, the town’s parish church features a gilded baroque interior and a strange arch assembled from S-shaped blocks of granite.
Centrally located in the market square, the town’s public fountain (Chafariz dos Pretos) is curiously ornamented with black faces. Nearby. Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo gives good access to those looking to pop over the border to Spain for a shopping trip or evening meal. A short drive south lies the historic village of Almeida, whose walls contain a regional-style Pousada hotel.
