Surrounded by wild-flower pastures and
spectacular mountain views, the small, well-groomed health resort
of Caramulo boasts some of the purest mountain air in Portugal.
During its heyday in the 1930s, the town was blessed with no
less than eighteen sanatoriums mostly catering for lung disease
sufferers, of which three are still in operation. What to see: Caramulo boasts a fascinating museum dedicated
to modern art and vintage cars, including an immaculate 1911
Rolls Royce. Nearby: Some spectacular panoramic views are within easy
reach of Caramulo. 5 km south-west, the 1,074-metre-high Caramulinho
Mountain provides the ideal picnic spot on a hot summer's day,
while the picturesque Loendros Botanical Reserve lies 20 km
north.
