PHARMACIES
Portuguese pharmacies are generally open every weekday
from 9 am to 1 pm and from 3 pm to 7 pm. On Saturdays,
most pharmacies are open from 9 am to 1 pm. At least
one pharmacy in the area is on 24-hour duty, the name
of which is highlighted on any pharmacy door.
POLICE
The urban police force responsible for public safety
in towns and cities is known as the PSP (Polícia
de Segurança Pública). Law and order in
rural areas is maintained by the GNR (Guarda Nacional
Republicana), which has a traffic division patrolling
highways and main roads throughout the country. 112
is the national emergency number.
POST OFFICES
Portuguese post offices (correios) are generally open
from 9 am until 6 pm, Monday to Friday. Centrally-located
post offices in the major cities are open on Saturdays,
while airport post offices stay open permanently. Stamps
(selos) are sold at Post Offices, street kiosks and
at all locations displaying the red post office sign
featuring a galloping white horse. First-class mail
known as correio azul is posted in the blue mailbox,
while second-class (normal) goes in the red box. An
express service called EMS should be used for urgent
letters and valuables.
