FÁTIMA
The story of Fátima began in 1915 with veiled
apparitions to a young girl called Lucia in the small
village of Fátima, about an hour's drive north
of Lisbon.
The following year, the apparitions continued with the
visit of the Angel of Portugal and the Angel of Peace,
according to Lucia, now a 92-year-old Carmelite Sister
of Saint Teresa in Coimbra. In 1917, Lucia and her two
cousins Jacinta and Francisco were visited on the 13th
of each month from May to October. The visions were
seen and heard by Lucia, then aged 10, and Jacinto (7),
but only seen by Francisco (9).
Among the prophecies of Our Lady of Fátima, as
she is known to the Portuguese, are the deaths of child
seers Jacinta and Francisco shortly after the apparitions,
the end of World War I, the unknown light of 1938 (Aurora
Borealis), the start of World War II and the rise and
fall of communism.
FISHING
Plenty of fishing opportunities exist along the coasts
and in the rivers and lakes of Portugal and the islands
of Madeira and the Azores. Regular deep-sea excursions
go in search of swordfish, ray, tuna and shark, while
freshwater anglers can cast for salmon, troup, pike,
bass, barbel and chub. However, there are limits on
where and when fishing is permitted, so in many cases
a licence is required.
